Right now, at this crossroad, figuring out your finances is one of the most important things you need to do, and do well. The clients I’ve worked with as a Certified Divorce Financial Analyst come from different stages of life and with different experiences. However, they all have one thing in common: They are at a crossroad in life.
Although it’s not easy, you’ll need to take emotion out of your calculations and take control of your finances. I can help figure it out – to put your mind at ease, allow you the lifestyle you desire, and the confidence to save and spend wisely. Not all relationships can be saved, but we can bring trust, peace, and self-worth back to your relationship with your money.
One of my very first clients came to me not knowing how to budget. She had been with her husband for 22 years when they split. She was working with a lawyer and trying to evaluate an offer on the table from her ex-husband, yet she had no idea what her monthly expenses really were. We went through line-by-line to calculate her true expenses, which turned out to be double what her ex was offering. Her husband had claimed his 6-figure salary wasn’t enough to pay more. At 44, out of the work force for over 10 years, she needed money to live, go back to school, and train for a life of independence. The offer that she had been ready to sign was changed.
Another client needed to evaluate a counter-offer from her ex. Together we calculated the effects of both offers over the next 2, 4, 10, 15, 20, and 30 years. In this case it was important to see the long term effects of both offers. There were several assets and a significant difference in the amount of spousal support between the two offers. The information was extremely valuable and empowered her to make a decision based on facts.
I met a woman at a networking event who was so tired of fighting she was ready to just walk away. I encouraged her to stop, breathe and think before making an emotional decision that would compromise the rest of her life. With the facts in front of her, she hired a lawyer to ensure she received what is rightfully hers.
